It does not go to the falls
The jet boat runs the gorge downstream of the falls — up to the whirlpool and down through the Devil’s Hole rapids. It does not go to the base of the Horseshoe Falls.
If seeing the falls close up is the point of your trip, you want a falls boat or the Journey Behind the Falls package, not this. Plenty of people book the jet boat expecting the falls and are disappointed by a trip that was never going to deliver them.
The two are complementary rather than competing: one is scenery, the other is a ride.
Who should not do it
The ride is deliberately rough — the boat is built to hit standing waves rather than avoid them. It is normally advised against for people who are pregnant, have back or neck problems, or have had recent surgery. Beyond the formal advice: if hard, repeated impacts sound unpleasant rather than fun, this is not a trip that grows on you halfway through.
Children under the age and height minimums cannot ride the open boat at all.
Who should take the dome instead
Not only families. The enclosed boat makes sense for anyone on a cold April or October day, anyone who does not want to spend an hour afterwards in wet clothes, and anyone who wants the gorge and the whirlpool without the drenching. It is the same route at the same speed.
The verdict
At around $68–73 for 45 minutes to an hour, it is not cheap for its length, and it is the one Niagara attraction that people either rate five stars or wish they had skipped. That split is about expectations rather than quality: it is a thrill ride on a river, marketed alongside sightseeing. Book it as the former and it is one of the best things at Niagara.
